The Périgord has known with the Croquants many peasant revolts.
But in the summer of 1789 it was a revolution that was at stake: the French Revolution. Here we go through his first five years, from the Estates General to the summer of 1794 which saw the fall of Robespierre.
Pierre-Eléonor Pipaud des Granges is one of those men of the Enlightenment who brought to Périgord the will to transform the country in a great regeneration.
But to this high ideal, the countryside, which then represented 95% of the population of Périgord, opposed the desire to see their old demands against the feudal order succeed without compensation.
They are organized around villages that have become small republics.
The most radical of the rural people, village roosters or national guards, contribute to the overwhelming success of the Montagnards in the Dordogne which prelude to the Year II. next to a limited Terror, we then see the famous representatives on mission like Lakanal. Releasing peasant charges, the Revolution prepared a nineteenth century of demographic growth of a peasantry with fairly assertive political choices.
Associate professor and doctor of history, Guy Mandon was interested in the history of our province at an early age. After publishing La Société périgorde au siècle des Lumières, he logically continued his research by studying the Revolution on which he published a 1789 in Périgord, Révolution et chemins de liberté. Inspector General of National Education, he also published a study of the world economy in the twentieth century. Originally from Saint-Saud, he wrote a biography of Georges Rocal, resistance priest and historian.
