Author : Maurice BIRET

Coming from an old family of the castle, Jean-Pierre Trigant-Gautier was particularly involved in the life of his commune from 1789 until his death in 1844. With the help of the geographer Belleyme he is notably at the origin of the creation of the commune of La Roche-Chalais formed by the union of the communes of Michel-la-Rivière and Amy-des-Lois on 11 nivôse year III of the French Republic. Becoming mayor in 1804, during the reign of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, he built against all odds and with his money, the first Catholic church of the young town, a church he dedicated to Saint-Napoleon.

TRIGANT-GAUTIER, a Protestant mayor in La Roche-Chalais (1804-1808)

His life, his work: the church of Saint-Napoléon

Until his death, he continued to take an interest in the life of his native country while opposing Pierre-François Galaup and then his son-in-law, Baron Augustin d'Arlot de Saint-Saud, other powerful families of La Roche-Chalais.

Maurice BIRET was born in Saint-Michel-Léparon, in the house where Robert Tatin, the author of Sylva Edobola, was born. Like him, he is a Doublaud in love with his native country. He is the author of two monographs awarded at the Clochers d'or competition: Saint-Michel-Lécluse-et Léparon, terre de frontières in 2000 and Manzac-sur-Vern over the centuries in 2003, a commune where he was a teacher. He is also the author of Un savant doublaud méconnu, François Viault who was mayor of Saint-Michel-Léparon. He has published numerous articles on the history of the Double in the bulletins of the Société Historique et Archéologique du Périgord (SHAP), the Cercle d'Histoire et de Généalogie du Périgord (CHGP) and the Groupe de Recherches Archéologiques et Historiques de Coutras (GRAHC). In recent years, he has regularly published "Chroniques doublaudes" in the municipal newsletter, Info 3 of the municipality of La Roche-Chalais.

With this new book, he wants to pay tribute to one of the first mayors of La Roche-Chalais, a remarkable man who dedicated his life to the public good.
